The Bill Cosby Cube Checkers Challenge — a fundraising tournament  combining awareness about learning differences, learning, and family activities with just plain fun was held in October at FAO Schwarz stores throughout the country. On November 9, 1998, the final championship was  hosted by the New York City's FAO Schwarz store on Fifth Avenue.

The contest was designed as elimination-style tournament, with twenty minute games.

Contestants were divided into three age groups:  children 8-10 years old, young teens 11-13 years old, and adults age 14 and over. Winners received a  $5,000 cash award, an FAO Schwarz spending spree, and the all expenses paid trip to New York.

Bill Cosby's interest in the game stems from its appeal as an activity for families and groups of all  ages, and from its ability to promote strategic thinking. "This game is like a magnet. Kids and adults actually want to take a break from the computer to play it,"
