An Important Message from Muhammad Ali

The mission of this foundation and the hope it brings to the lives of the many children it touches is truly monumental. As a child and adult who was and is afflicted with dyslexia, and the father of a a severely dyslexic daughter, I know first hand the challenges that many children with learning difficulties face, not only in school but at every turn in their lives.

For many years learning differences were misunderstood. Children unfortunate enough to be affected were labeled by teachers and peers alike as dumb, stupid and incapable of learning. These labels would stick throughout high school and follow many into the work place and everyday settings. They would even follow into the family--somewhere every child should feel valued and safe.

How many children have failed to pursue a higher education or a degreed career as a result of this misfortune?

As a high school student, many of my teachers labeled me "DUMB". Of course I knew who the real dummies were.

I barely graduated from high school. There was no way I was going to college--I never even thought about it. I could barely read my text books.

I was lucky though. I had enough belief and self esteem to carry me to greatness in other ways. But just think if the Hello Friend Foundation had been around when I was in school--I would be President by now--actually people would have liked me so much, I would have been going into my second term. The first black President would have been Muhammad Ali.

Fortunately, I have been able to overcome my learning differences through my own persistence. But most cannot and most will not without the right kind of help.

That's why this foundation's work is so necessary. The programs the Hello Friend Foundation funds provides specialized training for teachers and empowers them to make positive changes in a child's learning experience. Children begin to read with confidence and learn and participate in classroom discussions. They become contributors in class and not saboteurs. They find a purpose and miracles begin to happen.

You have an opportunity to become pivotal force in the life of a child. With your help and financial support, you and the work of this foundation will enable children to pursue their dreams and to strive for greatness--JUST LIKE ME!
