The Fordham University Graduate School of Education at Lincoln Center is the first recipient of the Hello Friend/Ennis William Cosby Foundation grant to train teachers to teach reading to students with learning differences. The grant provides 20 full tuition scholarships each year, for three years, beginning September, 2000 to the Ennis William Cosby Graduate Certificate Program entitled "Young Readers at Risk: Identification and Intervention." The program is designed for current, New York City public school kindergarten through second grade teachers who wish to expand their range of strategies for teaching reading and writing to young children with learning differences. The six graduate course (18 credit) program will include a supervised tutoring practicum and will lead to the award of the Ennis William Cosby Graduate Certificate.

"Our son, Ennis William Cosby, was passionate about education,"William H. and Camille O. Cosby said in a statement. "He wanted all students to feel the joy, excitement, and accomplishment of learning. By reaching out to working teachers, the program at Fordham will enable educators to translate their daily coursework into immediate impact in the classroom."

"The grant will enable us to create a new model for classroom teaching informed by current research in preventing early reading difficulties," said Joanna Uhry, Ed.D., Fordham assistant professor and project director. "This program is unique because it is a collaboration between the foundation, the University, and experienced teachers of young children."

The first class of recipients of the Hello Friend Graduate Certificate Program have graduated. Read the news release about this first class of New York City Elementary School teachers.
